2025 PRLC Post-Secondary Scholarships

What is it?

The Peel Regional Labour Council (PRLC) offers 8 annual scholarships of $1,000 each to support students from union families in the Peel Region pursuing post-secondary education. These scholarships aim to assist unionized families who save for their children’s education. The application is open to eligible students in the following categories:

  • Indigenous Community Scholarship
  • Racialized Community Scholarship
  • Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ Community Scholarship
  • Disabled Persons (Visible and Invisible) Community Scholarship
  • General Youth Scholarships

Applicants will submit:

1 (one) of the following, based on one of the predetermined topics for consideration;

  • 3-minute video
  • 250-word written statement
  • Visual art piece

2025 Topics for the Scholarship Application (choose one):

1. Describe how your life has been positively impacted by your family’s involvement in a union.

2. Reflect on what you feel are the main societal issues e.g. (universal healthcare, workplace injury, employment benefits, equity, etc.) that unions should be advocating for at this time.

3. As a child of unionized parents, how have union values and/or union organizing helped you overcome personal barriers related to your identity?

Application Process:

Please complete:

  • The attached Application Form in full (in English or French)
  • The category for which you are applying (e.g. Indigenous Community Scholarship)
  • Your original submission (written, video or artwork)

Applications in the form of a video should be emailed to the President as an attachment. Written statements should be in PDF format, sent as an email attachment or printed and/or mailed to the PRLC office. Visual Art pieces can be mailed or emailed.

Applications are to be received by 10:00 pm on May 13th, 2025.

Eligible Applicants Must:

  • be a member of a recognized union or the child* of a recognized union member in good standing which is affiliated with the Peel Regional Labour Council.
  • be 25 years of age or younger, and
  • be enrolled in a Canadian publicly funded post-secondary educational institution leading to a degree in the 2025-2026 school year OR
  • enrolled in a full time (30 weeks or longer) program at a publicly funded post-secondary educational institution leading to a diploma or certificate (must include course description/curriculum)
  • Accompanying applications supporting documentation includes: acceptance letter, tuition receipts, etc.

* children include biological or birth children, children by adoption and children by other, equivalent relationship

  1. Scholarships will be awarded annually based on ideas discussed in the video submission, artistic rendition, or written statement, as determined by a review panel composed of members in good standing from the Peel Regional Labour Council’s Inclusion and Equity Committee.
  2. Winning applicants will be asked to provide proof of enrolment at an institution of post-secondary education before the scholarship will be issued.
  3. Applicants may be entering any year of post-secondary study and may be returning to their studies after a break.
  4. The PRLC Post-Secondary Scholarships cannot be awarded to the same applicant more than twice. Unsuccessful applicants may re-apply for consideration in another qualifying year.
  5. Applications must be received by the PRLC President no later than 10pm on Tuesday May 13th, 2025.
  6. Annual topics will be released by the PRLC and posted on the PRLC website by the end of March of the year of application.

Any applications received after the deadline will not be considered for the scholarship under any circumstances. Late submissions may be re-submitted in the following year.
